What is Kendo?

Kendo is a fast-paced and dynamic martial art that is practiced by millions of people in Japan, drawing its traditions and culture from the age of the samurai. Modern kendo has a rapidly growing international community, where practitioners focus on self-development and discipline through rigorous training with bamboo swords (shinai), while wearing protective armour (bōgu). Kendo uses of the dan ranking system to qualify the abilities of individuals, and to assess progress. Kendo’s competitive component boasts world championships held every 3 years, involving over 50 countries displaying the “sport’s” strongest athletic examples.

Do I need prior experience to practice Kendo?

Kendo can be experienced and practiced on multiple levels making it an excellent path of self discovery for everyone at any age. We gladly welcome visitors who are interested to spectate or try our practice.

Tuesdays at 6:30-8:30 pm

How much does it cost to join Tesshin Dojo?

Dojo fees are paid tri-annually, on September 1st, January 1st, and May 1st.

  • Individual – $200/term

  • Family (Up to four people at the same address) – $250/term

All members are required to join and pay yearly membership fees to the Canadian Kendo Federation (CKF) an annual fee of $50. (Junior students 15 years and under $15)

Tesshin Dojo Instructors teach on a volunteer bases solely for the benefit, growth, and improvement of Kendo.

What equipment do I need to practice Kendo, and how much does it cost?

To start practicing Kendo, you will require nothing but comfortable gym clothes. Additional equipment will be required as you continue to make progress. You can expect the following expenses during the respective timelines:

  • 1-2 months – Shinai (bamboo sword) $40-60. Ordered online.

  • 1-2 months – Bokuto (wooden sword) $40-60. Ordered online.

  • 3 months – Keikogi and Hakama (top and bottom of uniform) approx. $150. These items are ordered through the dojo.

  • 6-8 months – Bōgu (armour) approx $500. This a major purchase and is made through the dojo to suppliers such as All Japan Budogu and KendoStar.

All purchases are made with the guidance of senior members or sensei to ensure that students are educated and informed regarding equipment standards and requirements in Kendo.

How long does Kendo equipment last?

Shinai may last 1-2 years with care. Keikogi and hakama should last several years. Bōgu should last 12-15 years with proper care and maintenance.

Is Kendo safe?

While Kendo is a martial art that is generally considered safe when practiced correctly and with proper protective gear, it's important to acknowledge that like any physical activity, there is always some level of risk involved. Here at our dojo, the safety and well-being of our members is our top priority, and we take all necessary precautions to minimize the risk of injury. Our instructors are highly trained and experienced in teaching proper technique and ensuring that all students practice safely.

Is Tesshin Dojo a member of the Canadian Kendo Federation (CKF)?

Yes, Tesshin Dojo is a proud member of the Canadian Kendo Federation.

The CKF oversees the progress and growth of kendo within Canada as well as the safety of each member training under its auspice. All members of Tesshin Kendo Club are require to pay annual CKF and keep their memberships in good standing. Benefits of CKF membership include seminar, tournament and grading opportunities as well as more serious matters such as insurance.
